International High School at LaGuardia Community College

Overview written by the school: We are a small, multicultural high school on the campus of LaGuardia Community College. All of our students are new to the country. We focus on English language development. Our teachers collaborate on interdisciplinary teams. We prepare English Language Learners for success in college and careers. Students develop their academic and English skills by completing individual and group projects. Students present portfolios for graduation and are able to stay for a free year of college as part of our Early College Program after they complete their high school graduation requirements within four years. While in the Early College Program, we provide students with academic support classes to ensure their success in college.

Program description: Students work on projects in all classes that align to our graduation portfolio rubrics. In all classes, students learn English and build research, writing, and presentation skills through their project work. All students complete a native language project each year as well, to strengthen their native language skills. Classes are small, usually 25 students, and students work together in groups in each class.
