James Baldwin School, The

Overview written by the school: It is our mission at the James Baldwin School to provide a haven for students who have previously experienced school as unresponsive to their needs as individuals. We wish for all student to find their voice and to speak knowledgeably and thoughtfully on issues that concern their school, their world. We aid students in this endeavor by personalizing our learning, by democratizing and humanizing the school environment, and by creating a "talking culture"-an atmosphere of informal intellectual discourse among student and faculty.

Academic opportunities:

Demanding and engaging learning: Our school offers in-depth study of academic subjects, field research and the sharing of meaningful work with public audiences, all of which results in students achieving at higher academic levels than they ever thought possible. Our school's rich and varied curriculum meets college entrance requirements and provides students with a broad range of post secondary choices. Learning extends outside of the classroom and includes opportunities with our partner organizations such as Integral Yoga, New York Live Arts, Hudson River Community Sailing, Highline, Opening Act and Camba's Learn to Work Program.

Performance Based Assessment Tasks: As a member of the New York Performance Standards Consortium, students complete graduation-level written tasks and oral presentations known as PBATs (performance based assessment tasks) and must take and pass the NYS English Language Arts Regents exam to meet the assessment requirements for graduation.

NYC Outward Bound School: Crew (small group focus on essential character and academic skills), student engaged assessment, and project based learning are at the heart of our work at JBS. We implement the nationally recognized EL Education school model which features rigorous learning experiences, both in and out of the classroom, and is built upon a culture of high achievement and mutual support. The James Baldwin School uses hands-on learning that has real-world application to ignite a joy for learning and discovery in our students. At our school, leadership, active citizenship, and character development go hand-in-hand with academic rigor and challenge.
