North Queens Community High School

Overview written by the school: North Queens Community High School (NQCHS) is a small transfer school designed for young people who have fallen behind their peers (by two or more years), have been truant, or dropped out of school. NQCHS is jointly operated by the New York City Department of Education and SCO Family of Services (a Community Based Organization/CBO) and follows the Good Shepherd School Model. NQCHS is designed to provide intensive support and services to students to ensure continued attendance in school. Each student is assigned an Advocate Counselor throughout their time at the school and is placed in a House where they will receive targeted academic and social-emotional support. An Advocate Counselor functions as the primary person in engaging with students and their families. The school is ungraded, committed to heterogeneous groupings, and integrates a challenging standards-based instructional model with the best practices in youth development. With an accelerated credit accumulation program, students will have the opportunity to earn up to 20 credits a year. Our students will also participate in post-secondary readiness programs.
