Brooklyn High School of the Arts

Overview written by the school: We are a family friendly, dual-mission high school providing talented students CITYWIDE with a strong curriculum in both their academic subjects, as well as fine arts, drama, dance, vocal music, band, and orchestral music. Along with their artistic studies, students are prepared for high academic achievement through college preparatory and Advanced Placement courses. Students are provided with multiple daily studio classes in their talent area, designed to prepare them for top fine arts and performing arts colleges and help them develop the discipline to be well-rounded students and future professionals. Situated in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn, we offer the opportunity to access the rich cultural vibrancy of the Brooklyn arts community.

Program description: The Visual Arts Studio is a rigorous four year curriculum that develops the student's technical abilities, critical-thinking skills and personal voice. Students have received honors like the Scholastic Art Awards, exhibition awards at the MOMA, admission to pre-college programs at local schools and scholarships for college. Courses include Foundational Art, Advanced Drawing, Painting, Mixed Media, Sculpture, Advanced Gallery, and Senior Portfolio Preparation, as well as Digital Art and Design.
